The Linux Foundation has added three new guides to its collection of enterprise open source guides for developing and using open source software.

The 17-year-old nonprofit’s main mission is to support open source communities, and as part of that mission, it released six enterprise open source guides in September, covering topics from recruiting developers to using open source code.

Recently, the Linux Foundation has released three guides in collaboration with the open source expert group TODO Group (Talk Openly, Develop Openly).

This series of guides is designed to help enterprise employees at multiple levels — executives, open source program managers, developers, lawyers, and other decision-makers — learn how to better benefit from open source activities.

The organization describes these three guides as follows:

  • Amplify Your Open Source Development Impact — from Ibrahim Haddad, Samsung Research America. This guide covers some practices that enterprises can adopt to help them expand their influence in large open source projects.
  • Launch an Open Source Project — from Christine Abernathy, Facebook; Ibrahim Haddad; Guy Martin, Autodesk; John Mertic, Linux Foundation; Jared Smith, Capital One. This guide helps enterprises already familiar with open source learn how to start their own open source projects.
  • Open Source Reading List. A must-read list for open source program managers, compiled by TODO Group members.

The six guides released in September include:

  • Creating an Open Source Program: Learn how to establish a program to manage internal open source use and external contributions.
  • Open Source Management Tools: A collection of tools that can be used to track and manage open source projects.
  • Measuring Your Open Source Program’s Success: Learn more about how top organizations evaluate the ROI of their open source programs and contributions.
  • Recruiting Developers: Learn how to recruit developers or identify talent from within by creating an open source culture and contributing to open source projects.
  • Participating in Open Source Communities: Understand the importance of dedicating internal developer resources to participate in open source communities and the best ways to do it.
  • Using Open Source Code: Ensure your organization meets its legal responsibilities when integrating open source code into your commercial products.

More guides are being developed and will be published on the Linux Foundation and GitHub websites like these.

The TODO Group has also published supplementary materials for four case studies, detailing the experiences of Autodesk, Comcast, Facebook, and Salesforce in building their open source programs. More plans are in the works.
